  1. Sourcing

Our biodegradable New Zealand Naked Leather (so named because it uses no chemicals in its processing) comes from farms in both Oamaru and Invercargill, on the South Island of New Zealand. These cow hides are produced as a by product of the food industry. Once ethically processed they are sent to our tannery in Chennai, South India. Why do we love this leather so much? Each hide is natural, therefore each Duffle&Co piece has a unique texture and grain to it, making it one-of-a-kind. It's buttery soft yet strong and durable, and develops character as it ages and most importantly, (unlike synthetic materials) it lasts!

  2. Dyeing

The biodegradable New Zealand Naked Leather is sent to be dyed in Chennai, South India using natural plant based dyes. This tannery is SEDEX certified, and also holds BSCI and Leather Working Group (Gold) certifications, so you can be sure that your NZ leather has been responsibly dyed.

  3. Making

Once the New Zealand Naked Leather is dyed, it is passed to our skilled artisans in our workshop a short distance away in Erode. This is where the material is cut into the correct patterns, assembled and sewn together. Our workshop here is a state of the art facility, with green building certification and powered entirely via Swiss solar power technology. Fun fact! Of these artisans (and our weavers) 76% are empowered women who are employed year round with fair wages. And don't worry, the men are too!

  4. Journey to you

Once our New Zealand Naked leather pieces have been made, they are packed together in cardboard boxes and collected by courier from our workshop. They are put on a plane in Chennimalai to arrive in Auckland. Once in New Zealand, they make their way to our distribution centre in Penrose who lovingly package them in compostable mailers (or sometimes reusable cardboard boxes) and send them out to you when you place your order.
