Journey

  1. Growing & Harvesting

Once our GOTS certified rain-fed cotton is in bloom, it is picked in Erode near our workshop. The cotton is removed from the bolls, stored in bags then processed ready for loom weaving.

  2. Weaving and Dyeing

The picked organic cotton is sent to our workshop in Erode, South India, known as the 'handloom town' where it is coloured using natural and azo free dyes, thus reducing the environmental impacts of our fabrics. Our weavers then hand weave the organic cotton canvas onsite in a contemporary 12-acre loom studio. This is a state of the art facility, with green building certification and powered entirely via Swiss solar power technology. The studio comprises two sheds that each measure 6,400 square feet, that house a total of 54 traditional wooden looms, so the space is clutter free, light and well ventilated.

  3. Making

Once the organic cotton canvas is made, it is passed to our skilled artisans who are also on site. This is where the material is cut into the pattern shape of The Weekender, assembled and sewn together. Fun fact! Of these artisans (and our weavers) 76% are empowered women who are employed year round with fair wages. And don't worry, the men are too!

  4. Journey to you

Once The Weekenders have been made, they are packed together in cardboard boxes and collected by courier from our workshop. They are put on a plane in Chennimalai to arrive in Auckland. Once in New Zealand, they make their way to our distribution centre in Penrose who lovingly package them in compostable mailers (or sometimes reusable cardboard boxes) and send them out to you when you place your order.
